Statins cause a dangerous reduction in CoQ10 levels
“In 2004, a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed
that diastolic dysfunction (heart muscle weakness) occurred in 70% of previously
normal patients treated with 20 mg a day of Lipitor for six months.
This heart muscle dysfunction was reversible with supplemental CoQ10.”
Doctors frequently prescribe a class of pharmaceuticals called statins to treat
high cholesterol levels. Statins act upon the liver to block production of LDL cholesterol
(“Bad Cholesterol). These powerful drugs can have a dramatic effect on the lowering
of dangerous LDL cholesterol. Unfortunately, statins also block the liver’s ability
to produce the life-giving antioxidant Coenzyme Q10, also called CoQ10. The body’s
diminished ability to produce CoQ10 in the liver is a direct effect of statins,
not a side effect. This means that statins act directly on the body’s metabolic
process responsible for CoQ10 production. Therefore anyone using statin drugs will
suffer reduced production of the essential enzyme - CoQ10.
